Joel Chandler Harris came into the world with very humble beginnings. He was the
illegitimate son of Mary Harris, being born in Eatonton, Georgia, United States of
America. At the age of just 13 Harris was an apprentice printer for a small local
newspaper owned by Joseph Addison Turner. Turner taught Harris the craft of writing.
Harris became a journalist, and he is most famous for writing the Uncle Remus series
of stories, based on one of the key characters, Uncle Remus, the black singer of
songs and teller of stories who used dialect to convey the struggle of the African
Americans in Down South nineteenth century USA. Another character in these stories
was . Br'er Rabbit ("Brother Rabbit"), a likable character, prone to tricks and
trouble-
Harris once observed about Br’er Rabbit: "the weakest and most harmless of all animals," but he is "victorious in contests with the bear, the wolf, and the fox." Thus "it is not virtue that triumphs, but helplessness; it is not malice, but mischievousness."
In 1946 Walt Disney produced a film of Joel Chandler Harris’ work called Song of the South that was an enormous success.
In 1918, ten years after the death of Harris, one of Harris’ 9 children, Julia wrote The Life and Letters of Joel Chandler Harris, a bibliographical account of her father which includes many anecdotes and letters to support the life and successes of her Father.
