Uncle Remus is a collection of animal stories, songs, and oral folklore, collected

This is the very rare first edition second issue which is in the publisher’s (D. Appleton and Company, New York) original brown boards with gilt decoration of Br’er Rabbit to the front and banjo to the spine
The boards are in incredibly clean and attractive condition with very slight corner knocks; shelf wear to the top and bottom of the spine; and slight marks to the plain back board. An extremely attractive set of boards
There are 231 numbered pages, butterfly design endpapers; the word “presumptuous” to the last line of page 9; 7 full page plates and numerous illustrations throughout the book; and an 8 page publisher’s catalogue to the end of the book. The pages are in overall Very Good condition being very clean and tightly bound in with an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown; an inscription to a blank preliminary page dated 1881; and a black mark to the bottom edge of the pages only noticeable when the book is closed
