Joel Chandler Harris Uncle Remus His  Songs and His Sayings Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation First Edition First Issue 1881

The First Edition has for sale the very rare  book ‘Uncle Remus His Songs and His Sayings Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation’ by Joel Chandler Harris.  This is the rare US first edition first issue book from 1881

Uncle Remus is a collection of animal stories, songs, and oral folklore, collected from Southern United States African Americans.  The stories are told in Harris' version of a Deep South slave dialect.  Br'er Rabbit ("Brother Rabbit") is the main character of the stories, a likable character, prone to tricks and trouble-making who is often opposed by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear.

This is the incredibly scarce first edition first issue of Uncle Remus in the publisher’s original (D. Appleton and Company, New York) blue-green cloth with gilt decoration of Br’er Rabbit to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine, having the butterfly design endpapers and "presumptive" in the last line of page 9.

The boards are in Good condition with fraying to the edges, corners, top and bottom of the spine, and with some loss to the spine

There are 231 numbered pages with 8 pages of advertisements to the end of the book (not mentioning Uncle Remus as required of this first edition, first issue).  The pages are very clean and in overall Very Good condition with 7 plates and numerous smaller illustrations throughout; with marks to the blank pages to the front and back where a child has placed some transfers; and the stitching does require attention where the pages have become loose within the book

This first edition first issue book of Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris rarely comes up for sale is highly collectable and rarely comes up for sale
