The First Edition is selling this rare Joel Chandler Harris US first edition book,
The Story of Aaron from 1896
Published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company [Boston and New York] in 1896, this is a lovely collectible first edition book by Joel Chandler Harris, the author of Uncle Remus.
The original beige coloured front board features a large illustration of two young people upon a large black horse with the title above in bright gilt; with the spine having black lettering; and the back board bearing a rabbit motif in a circle in black to the centre. The boards are in Very Good condition with the front board being extremely clean and attractive; the back board having light black marks; and knocks to the top and bottom of the spine.
There are 198 numbered pages, all edges tinted green, with 25 stunning illustrations by Oliver Herford, an accomplished artist who later went onto to illustrate the Peer Pan Alphabet (published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1907).
The pages are very clean and in overall Very Good condition with only the lightest of age toning to the margins; slight cracking/tear (with little or no loss) to the paper in the joint of the front free endpaper (cosmetic not structural); and the Frontispiece partly detached, but still bound into the book, with all other pages being bound in. Internally, this is an extremely attractive book.
This is a lovely example of this very collectible and desirable first edition book by Joel Chandler Harris, the author of Uncle Remus that was made into a Disney film called Song of the South
