The First Edition is selling this rare Joel Chandler Harris US first edition book,
Aaron in the Wildwoods, from 1897.
Published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company [Boston and New York] in 1897, this is a lovely collectible first edition book by Joel Chandler Harris, the author of Uncle Remus.
The original beige coloured front board features a large illustration of a man standing behind a tree with a pig to his left (taken from the illustration opposite page 32). The back board has a motif of a rabbit in a circle in black to the centre.
The boards are in Very Good condition with bright illustration and gilt lettering to the front board and with light marks to the front and back boards; darkening to the spine; partial break to the front hinge; cracking to the paper between the rear pastedown and the rear endpaper; and bumps to the top and bottom of the spine. Overall, an extremely attractive and presentable set of boards with the condition above what one would expect with a book commensurate of this age
There are 270 numbered pages, all edges tinted green, containing 24 illustrations by Oliver Herford, an accomplished artist who later went onto to illustrate the Peer Pan Alphabet (published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1907).
The pages are in overall Very Good condition with the lightest of age toning to the margins of the pages (barely noticeable, and only mentioned for completeness)
This is a lovely example of this very collectible and desirable first edition book by Joel Chandler Harris, the author of Uncle Remus that was made into a Disney film called Song of the South
